July 2 Marathon Log Update …

Got back on track and hit up a three mile run this evening. Filmed the video completely on my new iPhone and used a killer app called MotionX GPS by Fullpower to log my route, tell me how fast I’m going and how long I’ve gone. It also controls the music on my iPod within the app, so it’s awesome. I highly recommend it if you have an iTouch or an iPhone. It’s like $2.99 or something, but well worth it.

Marathon Update: June 18

In case you’re wondering, there hasn’t been any video this week because I’m all out of tape. Yes, I sadly do NOT own a hard drive camera, so that would mean I have to run out and get some of those little miniDV tapes.

I’ve bought too many of them this year and after using an HDD camera yesterday down in Rochester while covering the Jimmy Chase-Justin LaValle wrestle-off, it’s about time I “get with the times.”

Thursday’s run sucked. I got zero pace, no motivation, no rhythm. 3.34 miles (or 3.44). iPod started working tonight after I got home.

So I didn’t run Wednesday. My left achilles was feeling a bit funny, so I just rested instead of trying to pressure it. Bad runs for me right now, mean more walking and running.

So for now, I need a real video update, but I’ll just get a new camera instead, then work on it from there.

Things I don’t want to do today …

This run …

I’ll do it anyway, but I’m really NOT feeling motivated.

June 10 Marathon Update (no video, just notes)

So I’ve finished up the three straight days of running here in week two. I’ve been reading a lot about tips to prevent injury, stretching and ways to stay motivated.

I think doing the videos already has been a positive influence, because while posting them here, I’m also posting them over at TheWrestlingTalk.com and for my “friends list” on Flo. The support I’m getting has been beneficial, because many people I know on the boards have come to realize I’m not such a prick in real life, I just play one on TV.

All kidding aside, I feel really good about this. It’s going to be a battle. There are going to be days I don’t want to run. There are going to be days where I make excuses. I’ve had one real bad day where I was down on myself (Tuesday), but the last two days were good. My pace isn’t what I need to be worried about right now, although today, my pace was around 13:30. I ran 3.03 miles in just under 41 minutes.

I realize “fit” people can do a mile in about 10 without trying, probably much less, but I’m not in the greatest shape. My breathing and heart rate have adapted very well. I’m pleased that I’m not “dying” on these runs, but I’m also setting small goals.

The first two runs, I went with Abby, who is just over a week away from running her first marathon. She’s not even breaking a sweat when I’m just pouring out the perspiration. It’s like “the sweat guy” (I can’t remember what cartoon that was from).

I have to set small goals. Like running to a point without stopping, walking, then running to another point, then walking, etc. I just have to make that “point” get further and further each run, so I can keep setting small goals and achieving them without being discouraged.

The support from the folks on TWT, this blog and Facebook have been great for keeping me motivated. I just need to not worry about time, not get discouraged, and continue to utilize my rest days.

Tomorrow is a rest day, but I really, really need to mow the lawn. It didn’t rain for weeks, then I watered the lawn and it rained four out of the last six or seven days, so the weeds (aka, my lawn) are growing high.

I went to a retirement party tonight with Abby for one of her co-workers. Ironically, Friday is Abby’s last day at her job, she’ll be working with another company starting after Labor Day, so she’ll be traveling to South Africa for some volunteer work for most of July and August. I’ll be going over to South Africa in August to join her for a week and celebrate my 30th over there. Then we’ll come home for a week, then head to Virginia for Labor Day weekend.

Get to see some friends, meet more of the family and get to hit ODU’s first home football game in about 70 years.

So thanks to all who have been supportive on the runs. It’s been a big help. I appreciate it a lot.
